Exploring Repetition and Originality in Contemporary Painting
Six paintings that look identical? Almost - and that’s the point. Gateways to Now is a limited edition series of abstract geometric paintings - six original works (three in one colourway, three in another) - intentionally identical in composition and palette.
Editions and multiples are common in printmaking and photography, but less so in painting. By working with digital composition and carefully documenting every colour mix and step, I’ve developed a system that makes these hand-painted artworks repeatable.
This raises some fascinating questions: Can a painting still feel unique if it’s part of an edition? Does knowing there are identical versions change how we value it? Can repetition itself be part of the art?
While the process is system-driven, the joy of painting remains at the heart, creating with my hands and watching each piece come to life.
Originally shown in my MA exhibition, Wonder at PS1, the six paintings were hung in vertical pairs resembling doorways, inviting you to step into something. The immersive arrangement played with the idea of art as a threshold or passage, and highlighted the fleeting nature of exhibitions - moments when works come together, hold space, then disperse, never quite seen the same again.

Today, the six paintings stand as editioned pieces - two colourways, three each.
One of the blue editions (Gateways to Now PG7/PB15:3 – PB15:3/PG7) is currently on display at the Thelma Hulbert Gallery as part of THG Open 2025 (12 July – 23 August). The entire blue series is available for purchase there, so if you’re nearby, it’s a perfect chance to see and acquire these works in person.
If you can’t visit the gallery, the pink editions (Gateways to Now PV19 – PR122) are available to purchase directly through my website.
Thanks for exploring Gateways to Now - I hope they invite you in.
